Using market data on the lot

Buyers compare prices before they arrive. Knowing where your unit sits against nearby stores helps you answer with facts.

The buyer already looked

Buyers compare listings before they visit. The question "why is the store down the road cheaper?" is coming, so it helps to know the answer first.

Three things worth checking

  1. Price position. How does your asking price compare with similar vehicles nearby?
  2. The stores around you. Which nearby dealers carry similar inventory, how far away are they, and how long have their units been sitting?
  3. Your own aging units. Which vehicles have been on the lot longest, and which earlier buyers asked about something similar?

Talk about the total price

Whatever the market says, quote prices the way your store requires. The FTC warned 97 auto dealership groups about deceptive pricing in March 2026 (FTC) and published price transparency FAQs for auto dealers in September 2026 (FTC). Market data is for understanding the conversation, not for advertising a price your store has not approved.
